Electronic Travel Authorisation

3 minute read• Last updated: 20 August 2025

Please note, the information on this page is intended for businesses — find ETA information for visitors on the VisitScotland.com website.

The UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is an essential step in streamlining travel procedures for many international visitors.

This digital requirement now applies to most visitors to the UK, therefore as a Scottish tourism business, it is important to be aware of ETAs and be able to direct your international customers to appropriate guidance when required.

In this article:

  • What is an ETA and how does it affect my business?
  • What can my business do to help?
  • How can my customers apply for an ETA?

What is an ETA and how does it affect my business?

An ETA is a digital authorisation that grants individuals permission to travel to the UK. It is not a visa, but rather a pre-requisite for visa-exempt travellers. The authorisation is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, enhancing security and border management while offering convenience to visitors.

The ETA is valid for two years or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, it allows multiple entries into the UK for stays of up to six months.

It is a criminal offence to knowingly arrive without an ETA if one is required. Anyone travelling without an ETA is likely to be denied boarding by their airline or may be refused entry at the border.

Some groups are exempt:

  • British and Irish passport holders
  • travellers who already hold a UK visa

Check the full list of those who do not need an ETA.

What can my business do to help?

Highlighting ETA requirements to your customers in advance of their journey can decrease the chance of bookings being disrupted or cancelled.

You could include ETA information on your business’s website or within your email marketing after booking.

Suggest that they should:

  • Plan ahead - apply for the ETA well before their intended travel date to avoid last-minute delays.
  • Stay informed - keep track of updates regarding ETA by directing them to the ETA information for visitors on the VisitScotland.com website.
  • Check passport - the ETA is tied to a passport, so visitors need to ensure their passport is valid for the duration of their travel.

How can my customers apply for an ETA?

The application process for the ETA is entirely digital. It currently costs £16 per applicant through the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website.

A decision will usually be received within 3 working days, but in practice this will likely be much quicker, but it could also occasionally take longer.
