Electronic Travel Authorisation

3 minute read • Last updated: 9 April 2025

The UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is an essential step in streamlining travel procedures for many international visitors. This digital requirement now applies to most visitors.

The ETA is a digital authorisation that grants individuals permission to travel to the UK. It is not a visa, but rather a pre-requisite for visa-exempt travellers. The authorisation is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, making it a seamless and straightforward process for applicants.

An ETA is valid for two years or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, it allows multiple entries into the UK for stays of up to six months.

This information is for businesses - find ETA advice for visitors.

In this article:

  • How can visitors apply for an ETA?

Who needs an ETA?

While the ETA applies to many international travellers, some groups are exempt:

  • British and Irish passport holders are not required to obtain an ETA
  • travellers who already hold a UK visa are exempt from this requirement

Check the full list of those who do not need an ETA.

Unless exempt, from 2 April 2025 everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children. The online form allows the user to apply on behalf of other people, as long as they have their passport details.

Why is the ETA important?

The introduction of the ETA enhances security and border management while offering convenience to travellers. By pre-screening individuals before they arrive, the UK can ensure a smoother travel experience for both visitors and immigration authorities.

Anyone who tries to travel without an ETA is likely to be denied boarding by their airline or may be refused entry at the border. It will also be a criminal offence to knowingly arrive without an ETA if one is required.

The application process for the ETA is entirely digital. It currently costs £16 per applicant through the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website, making it an affordable option for most travellers. Applications are straightforward, requiring:

  • Personal information
  • Passport details
  • Answers to basic travel-related questions

The process is designed to be user-friendly, ensuring that applicants can complete it with minimal hassle. A decision will usually be received within 3 working days, but in practice this may be much quicker, or occasionally take longer.

What can I do to help?

You could include this information on your website or within your email marketing after booking, to ensure your customers are aware of the rules and ready to come to Scotland.

Suggest that they should:

  • Plan ahead: apply for the ETA well before their intended travel date to avoid last-minute delays.
  • Stay informed: keep track of updates regarding ETA, particularly if visitors come from a country affected by the introduction of ETA.
  • Check passport: the ETA is tied to a passport, so visitors need to ensure their passport is valid for the duration of their travel.

You'll find information on ETAs for visitors on the VisitScotland.com website.
