While the ETA applies to many international travellers, some groups are exempt:
- British and Irish passport holders are not required to obtain an ETA
- travellers who already hold a UK visa are exempt from this requirement

Unless exempt, from 2 April 2025 everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children. The online form allows the user to apply on behalf of other people, as long as they have their passport details.

Why is the ETA important?
The introduction of the ETA enhances security and border management while offering convenience to travellers. By pre-screening individuals before they arrive, the UK can ensure a smoother travel experience for both visitors and immigration authorities.
Anyone who tries to travel without an ETA is likely to be denied boarding by their airline or may be refused entry at the border. It will also be a criminal offence to knowingly arrive without an ETA if one is required.
