Long-term sustainability improvements

6 minute read • Last updated: 25 February 2025

Running on renewable energy and using green vehicles is the aim of all businesses but these sustainable improvements can require much more investment and time to transition. You can plan for these changes well in advance, set aside money and consider the best timing to make the transition easier. If you’re just starting a business, this is what you should aim to use and have from your first day where budget allows.

In this article:

  • Transition to electric vehicles
  • Install renewable energy systems
  • Record and reduce indirect emissions from your supply chain

Transition to electric vehicles

Transport is one of the largest contributors to emissions in Scotland, so transitioning to electric or hybrid vehicles is crucial for helping Scotland achieve its net zero emissions target by 2045.

They may have a bigger upfront cost than petrol or diesel vehicles, but they also have a lower cost per mile, cheaper maintenance, and a lower road tax.

In the long run, they’ll even pay for themselves, provided you have a green energy supplier that supports EV usage.

  • Work out the costs of your current vehicles to set a benchmark for when switching to EVs will be cheaper. Look at long-term lease car or van options for you and your company. There might be a benefit-in-kind option that makes owning an EV accessible for you. Find out more about EVs from Energy Saving Trust.
  • Plan the costs of switching to an EV into your net zero roadmap. Set a target and manage what you need to put aside to make the switch affordable. Register for information about future used electric vehicle loans on Energy Saving Trust.

Types of electric vehicles

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) - fully powered by electricity with ranges between 100-400 miles.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) - use both electric motors and traditional engines with a typical range of 20-50 miles on electricity alone.
  • Range extender electric vehicles (REEVs) - feature a small engine to charge the battery, not directly powering the vehicle.

Install renewable energy systems

Install renewable energy systems like solar panels, small wind turbines, heat pumps, solar water heating or biomass to generate your own energy. Renewable energy generation is essential to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. This might require an upfront investment but will save you money over time and allow for a sustainable business model for the future.

Plot out exactly how much each energy source will cost you to install and maintain and how much money it will save you over the next couple of years. You can find a guide on heat pumps from Business Energy Scotland, learn about solar water heating and biomass from Energy Saving Trust.

There are options for business free loans with cashback. Browse support on Find Business Support or read about the SME loan scheme from Business Energy Scotland.

Solar panels

Save money in the long-run and reduce your emissions by putting in solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. They aren’t suitable for all businesses, so it will depend on your roof direction / pitch, and location.

  • A local installer might be able to provide insight into potential solutions for your property. Find a renewables installer through Energy Saving Trust and check if they are MCS-certified.
  • Solar can be a big investment so it’s wise to monitor grants and funding and start to budget for the change ahead of time. Find solar panel guidance and financial support from Energy Saving Trust.

Record and reduce indirect emissions from your supply chain

Indirect emissions are mostly emissions that come from your supply and value chains. Value chains include a series of steps that go into your finished product or service, for example marketing or procurement.

Much of these emissions are outside your control, but that doesn’t mean you can’t influence them.

  • Identify your suppliers

Identify your supply or value chain emissions including purchased goods and services and their transportation, fuel and energy, waste, business travel and employee commuting, use of sold products, and more.

  • Record the emissions

Record your supplier emissions to get a more complete picture of your greenhouse gasses and the knowledge to address more complex supply chain issues.

  • Set targets

Set emission reduction targets for the next two to three years and beyond. As you do, you’ll slowly start to understand which indirect emissions you have and where they’re coming from. It’s important after your first three years to start to measure and become more accurate.

  • Monitor change over time

After completing your first three years the carbon emissions may need to be converted to build a more complete picture of your supply chain. This will allow you to report greenhouse gas emissions associated with your broader business activities beyond the scope of our calculator. Using these will allow you to change one set of units to another and build a more complete picture. For example, when calculating distance, fuel or waste. You will need to learn how to split these and what you currently have into scopes one, two, and three.
